Royan guide

Royan and Saint-Palais-sur-Mer from Arvert: market, beaches and 1950s architecture

About twenty minutes' drive from Arvert, Royan is the main town of the Côte de Beauté. Levelled in 1945, it was entirely rebuilt in the 1950s, making it today one of the leading examples of modernist seaside architecture in France — a very different backdrop from the oyster-farming villages of the Seudre basin.

Post-war reconstruction architecture

Notre-Dame de Royan church, with its concrete spire and coloured stained glass, is the symbol of this reconstruction. The seafront, the central market with its fan-shaped structure, and several buildings in the town centre form a coherent whole, listed and studied for its 1950s architecture — a curiosity worth the visit even out of season.

The central market

Its round hall, open every morning, brings together local producers, fishmongers and greengrocers under a roof structure that is itself part of the town's architectural heritage. A good stop for putting together a meal for fifteen to take back to the house.

Royan's beaches

La Grande Conche stretches for nearly two kilometres in front of the town centre, with all the amenities of a seaside resort. Further west, Plage du Chay and the Conche du Pigeonnier offer a quieter atmosphere, right by the coastal conservation area.

Saint-Palais-sur-Mer

Just before Royan coming from Arvert, Saint-Palais-sur-Mer keeps a more residential, wooded character. Plage du Bureau, in the centre of the village, and the coastal path running to the Grande Côte offer small sheltered coves, less crowded than the Royan seafront in high summer.

How to get there

Allow about twenty minutes by car from Arvert to Saint-Palais-sur-Mer, and twenty-five to central Royan, via the D25 then the D733. In season, it's best to aim for a late-morning arrival to find parking easily.
